ELECTION DAY SELF CARE TIPS YOU NEED

The PTO Nomad

Tomorrow is a huge deal. Either way the votes may fall will change the course of history and greatly affect our life currently. And that is a lot to take in when you really think about it. Events like election day are one of the most stress-ridden days we encounter in America right alongside Black Friday. Depression and anxiety will be at an all-time high!

With all that being said, it is so important that you implement some self-care and preservation to make sure that tomorrow doesn’t intervene with your mental health and wellness.

Here are some suggestions I have:

Get up early to meditate or pray. Try your best to clear your mind of intrusive and negative thoughts. Tomorrow’s result although important is not a death sentence. When you meditate, tell yourself that all that is in your power will be fruitful.

Write down a list of affirming statements and goals that you have complete control over. It can be as small as organizing your closet or starting a business. Word each goal with gratitude. For example, I am so grateful that I will complete a new book by Friday. This type of writing conditions your brain for success and helps eliminate doubt. This exercise will also help you feel more in control over your future, despite the election results.

Don’t watch the polls all day long. Seeing the numbers rise and candidates fall behind is just an opportunity to let anxiety and anxiousness come right on in. I know we all want to see what is going on, but try limiting your checkpoints to maybe once per hour or even better when polls close at 7 pm. Setting this boundary for yourself allows you to occupy your time with other things and tasks and accept that you have done your part and things are out of your control.

Mute anyone that may be triggering on social media. Honestly, I am a blocker, I’m an emotional being so I feverishly protect my peace. Thus I have no one else to mute like this, but I know there are some extremely mature people that like to keep those with radically opposing views on their timeline to keep a pulse on the opposite political world. But tomorrow may not be the best day to be Switzerland or neutral. Tonight is a good night to purge your friends list and make room for more light on your timeline.

Request the day off after the election. There are two times a year that I take an event-related day off, and that is post-election day, and post Superbowl if my team is playing. Use that paid time off, or PTO day to take that mental health rest. Disconnect from social media and the news. Do something creative, read a fictional book, listen to some music, anything that will pump some serotonin into your brain.

Please share other ways you plan to use self-care tomorrow! Are you going to try any of these?
